Maize Island Lagoon Conservation Park
_
General Information
Maize Island is 160km north east of Adelaide, around 2 hours drive. Located near Waikerie on the Holder Settlement Road, this area has some beautiful cliffs, lagoons and birdlife.
Facilities
This park has no facilities at all, but numerous places to camp alongside the water. Campfires are allowed except from November 15 through to end of April.
Campsites
Campsites are spread all over the Park, but signage is poor. The first few sites we saw, were on steep ground, and would not allow for much spreading out with tents, tables etc. At the end of the road, we found it be more level. We just stopped at a cleared area and used that as our base. The roads in to the park vary in quality - some are very narrow and have large holes, so you would need to proceed with caution in a 2WD or with a caravan.
Amount of shade varies site-to-site. Your site decision will be determined by the weather.
Activities
The main reason to come to this Park would be to go canoeing/kayaking, fishing or watching birdlife. The water can be fast moving, so swimming could be dangerous, and not suitable for children. When we were there, animal activity was minimal but that could be due to the heat of the time we visited. We did put a yabby net out, and caught a few good size yabbies but released them all back.
