Hutchenssons Campground, Lower Glenelg National Park
The Lower Glenelg National Park is very close to the border of South Australia and Victoria, near the townships of Nelson (Vic) and Mount Gambier (SA).
In the National Park, there are a number of campsites, and one beautiful one is Hutchenssons campsite, right along the beautiful Glenelg River. Head to Princess Margaret Rose Caves, and the turn off to Sandy Waterholes will lead you in the right direction.
Access to this site is really 4WD – parts of the road were very sandy in some places, and muddy in others. Depending on weather conditions, a 2WD could have some problems. We did see a 2WD there, so it is possible, but I would use caution.

View from shore of campsite
The campground has only 2 sites available, and you do need to book.
This can be done online here
The beauty of this location is two-fold.
1) The isolation from everyone and everything (don’t want to forget any key items, as its a bit of trip back to Mt Gambier or Nelson).
2) Location, location. Overlooking the river, with its own little jetty, the privacy and the view combined makes this one special camping site.
Site 1 is the flatter and larger of the 2 sites. This site can accommodate camper trailers (not sure how a caravan would go getting there).
Site 2 (closest to the toilets) is on more a downward slope, so not suitable for camper trailers. This is still a large site as can be seen in the photos below.
Facilities
There are 2 drop toilets and a rainwater tank (though you can’t guarantee water in it, and it would need treating). There are firepits at both sites. You must bring your own firewood.
