Jetboil Flash
We purchased this item as in the morning, we need a quick cup of coffee to get us going! Lighting a fire to boil a billy or setting up our 2 burner gas stove took too long, and we wanted something fast plus an item that could be stored in our daypacks on our walks (to make a brew when hiking). If you are after boiled water quickly, wherever you may be, this is a good product.
If you use freeze dried food for your hikes, this is also a good alternative to boiling up a billy or taking a thermos.
Prices vary amongst models, so do some homework.
The 1 litre cup, boils in 2 minutes and its color changing indicator on the side of the insulated cup, tells you when its ready. It lights quickly, withstands wind and comes with lots of different accessories should you wish to pay extra for them.
The fuel it uses is isobutane/propane and you can purchase these canisters at reputable camping stores such as Ray’s Outdoors or Snowys.
Is this a regular choice for our cooking needs?
No. We find it too bulky and not suitable for our cooking needs, though at time of purchase, we thought we would use it a lot more.
Since that time, we have found other stoves that are better suited to camping and cooking. Read more about choosing a camping and hiking stove here.
Word of warning
Once to save money, we purchased a cheaper fuel canister from a large variety store, and the flame escaped, and melted the outside of the cup – not that it damaged it to the point we cannot use it, but certainly made us realise the importance of buying quality products.
Coffee making
You can purchase a filter and turn this into a coffee press. Read more about camping coffee makers here.
