Blow Up Air Mattresses

We were newbies to camping and it was winter.........We climbed into our tents and lay on our blow up mattresses and in our warm sleeping bags and prepared to settle down for a cozy sleep............And we waited for sleep to come and we waited some more.
And then we wondered to ourselves, why are we so cold? Are our sleeping bags not rated high enough? The cold just kept coming up from underneath us, but we could not get warm enough. More layers of clothing were added to our bodies, yet the cold remained for a long 8 hours. As soon as the birds woke us, we climbed out of our igloo like tents to get warmth from a campfire.
Upon our return to the city, we investigated and found from others who had gone before us, that these air mattresses in winter can be a campers nightmare. Your body cannot warm the amount of air circulating in the mattress, plus the cold coming from the ground and seeping into the mattress, just meant we were sleeping on a soft bed of ice for that night.
Our lesson was learned the hard way - invest in great self inflating mattresses, and do away with the blow up mattresses (better suited for lounging in a swimming pool).
FYI: How to choose a self inflating mattress is a link worth checking out!
So upon our return to the city, we read up on self inflating mattresses, and began purchasing the right equipment for camping!
Going to your bed, after a busy day in the fresh air whilst camping, should be an enjoyable experience, so if in doubt over what to purchase for your bedding - choose quality, not price.
Whilst it may seem a hardship to spend that extra money on a Black Wolf or Thermarest self inflating mattress, your body will thank you for it on a cold night!! (plus they are a lot easier to put away, and require no pump to inflate).
